Why VASER® is superior to SmartLipo and other Laser Liposuction Alternative Procedures

Dr. Stein is board certified by the American Board of Laser Surgery. He has been pioneering laser technology for over 25 years. Dr. Stein was also one of the very first physicians in North America personally trained by Dr. Alfredo Hoyos (the inventor of  VASER®) in Advance Body Sculpting Applications. The Stein Medical Institute is a world leader in VASER® LipoSelection procedures. Dr. Stein performs VASER procedures constantly and has personally performed over 1,000 cases. Because of Dr. Stein's extensive training and experience with both laser and VASER technologies, he is able to easily explain the benefits and differences of VASER versus laser technologies such as SmartLipo.

Benefits of VASER® over laser technologies such as SmartLipo are:

  • VASER emulsifies fat more quickly than laser.
  • VASER is quicker and more precise than laser and therefore more effective for body sculpting and removing fat efficiently.
  • VASER is safer than laser, because the selective ultrasound waves of VASER cannot disrupt tissue types that are not fat (such as muscle, skin, nerves and blood vessels), which laser CAN disrupt.
  • VASER has less potential risks than laser, whcih can damage skin or internal organs if performed by untrained professionals.
  • VASER is more cost effective than SmartLipo and other laser technologies, because it is faster, safer and more effective in sculpting the body.

Dr. Stein's analysis of current technology, as denoted in the short video clip below, is that laser adds to cost and improves nothing with regard to hi-tech body fat sculpting. The problem with the laser technology of SmartLipo, as you can readily see in this video clip (compared with the VASER demo with Crisco video clip at the bottom of this page), is that SmartLipo is far too slow to enhance body sculpting. These clips demonstrate VASER® LipoSelection's superior ability to emulsify and remove fat quickly and effectively.

SmartLipo's laser technology takes over a minute to melt an eraser size area of fat, making it too focused to be effective and efficient - even in removing fat from small areas like under the chin. Additionally, while both techniques stimulate collagen contraction and overlying skin tightening due to the side effect of heating (which both technologies produce), VASER is more practical, safe and efficient.

Another benefit over VASER over SmartLipo and other laser techniques is VASER's unique tissue selectivity. With SmartLipo, the laser will melt any tissue you point it at - including muscle, skin, nerves, and blood vessels. VASER is tuned to specifically disrupt fat cells and leave all other tissue types untouched and intact which is why it is much more safe for patients. In addition, when laser techniques are not performed by skilled professionals, the complications and risks can be high for full thickness skin burns to internal organ damage.

Many of our patients ask if there is a benefit of combining the two technologies, VASER and SmartLipo or laser. Our answer to this question is that combining these two technologies offers no advantages and only increases cost to you. Therefore, we do not recommend combining the two.

What is the difference between VASER and SmartLipo laser technologies?

VASER uses ultrasound waves to remove and sculpt fat in different body areas. SmartLipo uses laser light to dissolve fat. The ultrasound waves from VASER not only fracture the fat cell and emulsifies its contents (which are then gently suctioned permanently out of the body), it generates heat under the collagen beneath the skin causing the overlying collagen to contract and the skin to tighten. Laser fat removal techniques, such as SmartLipo, essentially boil the fat cells and melt their contents with heat energy generated by their light waves. VASER is also unique in that it has tissue selectivity and therefore can identify fat cells versus other types of tissue- such as skin, muscle, nerves and blood cells. Because of its tissue selectivity capabilities, VASER only affects and emulsifies the fat cells. Laser is not tissue selective, therefore there is greater risk involved and potential of damage to skin, muscle, nerves and blood cells. SmartLipo, and other such laser technologies, are slow, inefficient and do not lend themselves, in Dr. Stein's opinion, to body fat sculpting like VASER technologies can.

How safe is Vaser Liposelection?

Vaser technology is much safer than traditional liposuction. In the videos below, you can see how the Vaser wand applies ultrasonic energy to dissolve fat, but yet doesn't cause any trauma to solid body tissue.

In the video below, you can easily see how the Vaser wand dissolves fat (in this case, using Crisco shortening to simulate body fat.

This video shows how, even thought the Vaser wand dissolves fat cells, the ultrasonic energy does not cause injury, pain or burning to solid flesh, in this case, a test subject's index finger.
